THE FULL STORY

Sport stacking, also called speed stacking, is a real competition where kids and adults race to build pyramids out of special plastic cups and then knock them flat again. The world record for a full โ€œcycle stackโ€ of 12 cups is under five seconds. Watching it in real life feels like a magic trick.

The cups are designed with holes in the bottom so they donโ€™t suction together. Stackers practice for hours, and good ones use both hands at the same time, like a drummer playing two snares. Their fingers tap, lift and slap so fast that the cups seem to flow from one shape to another.

Schools around the world use cup stacking in gym class because it builds hand-eye coordination and uses both sides of the brain at once. The current generation of top stackers learned by watching online videos, slowing them down, and copying every wrist flick frame by frame.
