THE FULL STORY

Baby flamingos hatch gray, not pink. They get their famous color from their food - algae and tiny brine shrimp packed with natural orange-pink pigments called carotenoids. The more they eat, the pinker they glow.

A group of flamingos has one of the best names in the animal kingdom: a “flamboyance.”

They’re also famous for standing on one leg. Scientists think it actually takes less effort than standing on two, and tucking up one leg helps them keep warm in chilly water.
