Hummingbirds live life at full throttle. Their tiny hearts can race to more than 1,200 beats per minute, and their wings blur as they beat up to about 80 times every second.

All that effort lets them hover perfectly still in mid-air, and they’re the only birds that can truly fly backward.

Despite their pea-sized brains, hummingbirds have brilliant memories. They can remember every flower they’ve visited and even how long it takes each one to refill with nectar.
