THE FULL STORY

The legend of Saint George and the Dragon is one of the most famous dragon stories in Europe. According to the legend, a fierce dragon was living in a lake outside a city. Every day the people had to feed it sheep so it would not attack them. When they ran out of sheep, they had to start sending in their children.

One day it was the princess’s turn. Just as she was being led to the lake, a Roman knight named George rode by. He drew his sword, charged the dragon, and pinned it with his spear. The princess led the wounded dragon back into the city, and the whole town was saved.

Saint George is now the patron saint of England, and the English flag is literally called β€œthe Cross of Saint George.” The story is so old that no one is sure how it started - Saint George was a real Roman soldier who lived about 1,700 years ago, but the dragon story was added on later.
