THE FULL STORY

T. rex arms are one of the most famous “huh, that’s funny” features in nature. They were only about 3 feet long, on a body that could stretch over 40 feet. Pictures of T. rex skeletons make the arms look almost cartoonish - way too small for that giant body.

But “small” doesn’t mean “weak.” A T. rex arm bone is short and stubby because it was packed with serious muscle. Studies suggest each arm could curl over 400 pounds - enough to lift a small refrigerator.

What were they for? Scientists still argue. The leading guesses: holding struggling prey close while the massive jaws did the actual killing, or maybe pushing the dinosaur up off the ground when it lay down to rest.
