THE FULL STORY

The Yeti is the Himalayan version of Bigfoot. For hundreds of years, people from Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan have told stories of a large, hairy, human-like creature that lives high in the mountains. Western explorers nicknamed it the “Abominable Snowman” in the 1920s after a translator mangled a Tibetan phrase.

The most famous Yeti evidence is photos of giant footprints in the snow. Climbers heading up Mount Everest have reported seeing them for almost a hundred years. People who say they have seen the Yeti describe a tall figure covered in thick white or reddish-brown fur, sometimes walking on two legs and sometimes on four.

In 2014, scientists analyzed several famous “Yeti” hair samples that had been collected from caves and supposed sightings. Most of them turned out to belong to a rare type of Himalayan brown bear. That might explain a lot of the legend - but plenty of climbers still claim to have seen something stranger than a bear up in the snow.
