In ancient Greek mythology, Zeus was the king of all the gods. The Greeks believed he lived on top of Mount Olympus, a real mountain in northern Greece that often hides in the clouds. From up there, he was said to watch over humans and other gods, handing out rewards, punishments, and the occasional thunderstorm.
According to the myths, Zeus carried a lightning bolt as his weapon. Special workshops belonging to the Cyclopes were supposed to forge these bolts for him. When Zeus got angry - which happened a lot - the Greeks said you would hear it as thunder rumbling across the sky.
Zeus had two brothers in the legends: Poseidon ruled the seas and Hades ruled the underworld. Together they were said to have overthrown their father, the Titan Cronus, and split the world between them. Even today, the planet Jupiter is named after Zeusโs Roman version.
