The Ford Mustang
THE FULL STORY

On April 17, 1964, at the New York World's Fair, Ford pulled a giant sheet off a car that would change everything - the brand-new Mustang. It had a long hood, a short rear, four seats, and a price tag of just $2,368, which most working families could afford. Within 24 hours, dealers across America had sold 22,000 of them. Within a year, they sold over 400,000. It was the biggest car launch in Ford's history.

The Mustang was the brainchild of a Ford executive named Lee Iacocca, who realized that millions of baby boomers were turning 18 and wanted something sportier than their parents' boring sedans. The car came in dozens of colors with names like Poppy Red and Wimbledon White, and you could pick from hundreds of options to make yours unique. Hollywood fell in love instantly - a sleek green Mustang Fastback starred in the 1968 movie Bullitt, tearing through the hills of San Francisco in one of the most famous car chases ever filmed.

Ford has made Mustangs ever since, more than 10 million in total. The car has appeared in James Bond movies, on race tracks, and in countless garages where teenagers have spent weekends polishing chrome bumpers. The Mustang started a whole new category called 'pony cars,' inspiring rivals like the Camaro and the Challenger. It proved that a single great design, launched at the right moment, can become a piece of culture itself.
