THE FULL STORY

On April 7, 1948, representatives from 26 countries finished ratifying a document that created a brand-new global organization with one giant mission: keep humans healthy. The World Health Organization, or WHO, was born - a branch of the brand-new United Nations dedicated to fighting disease, sharing medical research, and helping countries that didn't have enough doctors or vaccines.

The world badly needed WHO. World War II had left millions of people sick, hungry, and displaced. Diseases like smallpox, polio, and malaria were killing people by the millions every year. WHO got to work fast, launching huge vaccination campaigns. Their biggest victory came in 1980, when they announced that smallpox - a disease that had haunted humans for thousands of years - had been completely wiped off the planet thanks to a worldwide vaccine push.

Today WHO has headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and offices in 150 countries. It tracks outbreaks of new diseases, sets safety standards for medicines, and rushes help during emergencies like earthquakes and pandemics. Every April 7 is celebrated as World Health Day. The next time you get a vaccine or read about scientists chasing down a new virus, there's a good chance WHO is part of the story - a quiet team-up that has saved more lives than any army in history.
