A tiny jellyfish called Turritopsis dohrnii has a remarkable trick. When it’s injured, sick or starving, instead of dying it can transform its cells back into an earlier, baby-like stage called a polyp.
From there it grows up all over again. In theory it can repeat this cycle endlessly, which is why scientists call it the “immortal jellyfish.”
In the real ocean most still get eaten or caught by disease, so they don’t truly live forever - but their bodies don’t have to die of old age the way ours do.
