THE FULL STORY

Liechtenstein is a tiny country in the Alps, snug between Switzerland and Austria. With only 160 square kilometres and around 40,000 people, it’s so small it would fit easily inside a mid-sized city. It also has no military.

Liechtenstein is “doubly landlocked,” meaning every neighbour it has is also landlocked. To reach the ocean from Liechtenstein, you have to cross Switzerland or Austria first - then at least one more country after that. The only other doubly landlocked country is Uzbekistan.

The country is technically a princely monarchy. The royal family lives in Vaduz Castle, perched on a cliff right above the capital. The current prince still has unusually strong political powers - including the ability to veto laws - which most modern monarchs don’t.
