Earth is the wrong name for our planet. Most of it isnβt earth at all - itβs ocean. About 71% of the surface of the planet is covered in saltwater, and the ocean holds 97% of all the water on Earth combined.
The Pacific Ocean alone is bigger than all of the land on the planet put together. You could fit every continent - Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe, Australia, Antarctica - into the Pacific with room left over. Looking down at Earth from space, depending on which side is facing you, you might see almost nothing but blue.
The ocean also drives weather, regulates the climate, and holds the majority of life on Earth. Around 80% of all known living species live in the ocean - and scientists think weβve barely scratched the surface of describing whatβs down there.
