The American Magazine
THE FULL STORY

On February 13, 1741, in the bustling city of Philadelphia, a printer named Andrew Bradford rolled out the first edition of 'The American Magazine, or A Monthly View of the Political State of the British Colonies.' It was a thin little booklet of news and essays for colonists who wanted to feel a bit more sophisticated. Just three days later, his rival, the famous Benjamin Franklin, published his own competing magazine called 'The General Magazine.' Both men had been racing for the bragging rights of going first, and Bradford squeaked ahead.

Magazines were already popular in London and other European cities, but printing one in the American colonies was tricky. Paper was expensive, ink was messy, and the wooden presses had to be hand-cranked one page at a time. Bradford filled his pages with news from London, colonial debates, poems, and reports about taxes. His magazine only lasted three issues before it folded. Franklin's didn't do much better, lasting six. Subscribers were too spread out across muddy roads to make it pay.

Still, those two scrappy little booklets started something huge. By the 1800s, American magazines were everywhere, mixing serial novels, fashion tips, recipes, and political fights between the same covers. Eventually came 'Time,' 'National Geographic,' kids' magazines like 'Highlights' and 'Cricket,' and now the endless online versions you scroll on your phone. Every blog post, every kids' magazine in a doctor's office, every glossy cover at the grocery store traces back to Andrew Bradford's stubborn little publication printed by candlelight in 1741.
