THE FULL STORY

The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ is one of the fastest cars ever made for the road. In 2019, a special version reached 304 miles per hour on a test track in Germany. At that speed, the car is moving faster than the take-off speed of most passenger jets. Most cars on highways are limited to around 70 mph.

The engine is a beast. It has 16 cylinders arranged in a W shape and produces 1,578 horsepower, more than 10 family cars combined. Four turbochargers force extra air into the engine to make it even more powerful. The Chiron has so much power that engineers worried the wheels would rip the tires apart.

To handle those speeds, the tires are custom-built and X-rayed for tiny flaws. A new set costs about $42,000 - more than many entire cars. The Chiron itself sells for around $3 million, which is partly why fewer than 100 of the fastest version were ever built.
