THE FULL STORY

Canada has the longest coastline on Earth, stretching more than 202,000 kilometres along three different oceans - the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Arctic. If you tried to walk the whole thing without stopping, it would take about four years.

Why so much? Canada has more than 52,000 islands of its own, and every single one adds to the coastline. The countryโ€™s northern shore is also a wildly squiggly maze of fjords, peninsulas, and bays that snake far into the land.

Almost all that coastline is empty. Most Canadians live within a few hundred kilometres of the southern border with the United States. Whole stretches of the northern Arctic coast are home only to polar bears, seabirds, and the occasional research station.
