There are 206 bones in the adult human body, and the smallest of all is a tiny one tucked deep inside each ear, called the stapes (rhymes with βtapesβ). Itβs about 3 millimeters long - smaller than a grain of rice. Itβs also one of the three smallest bones in your body, alongside the hammer (malleus) and anvil (incus), which sit right next to it.
The three of them together are called the ossicles, and they have one job: passing along sound vibrations. When sound waves hit your eardrum, the eardrum vibrates. That vibration nudges the malleus, which nudges the incus, which nudges the stapes. The stapes then taps its base against the cochlea - the fluid-filled spiral inner ear - and converts that final vibration into the signal your brain reads as sound.
The whole journey takes a fraction of a second and happens for every sound you ever hear. So when you hear someone say your name, three of the tiniest bones in your body had to vibrate just right to deliver it.
